The workshop on the accuracy of water tests at the Fisch & Reptil 2005/2006 fair
[MG] Magnesium and [CA] Calcium tests on the test benchIntroduction:
Several times in the past years we have already tested the relevant tests for their measurement accuracy. This year it was an honour for us to do this even Öffentlich. We were pleased to be invited by the Fisch & Reptil trade fair to a workshop on the accuracy of water tests for phosphate [Po4], nitrate [No3], calcium [CA] and magnesium [MG]. Since one can hardly manage the effort alone, I am looking forward to the help of Armin Glaser, Markus Leiser, Harald Mülder, Sabine Mülder and of course Manuela. Over the years, our test comparisons have also been taken seriously by quite a few manufacturers, as the feedback has become increasingly greater. This time, too, we will keep you informed about reactions from companies.

All tests were carried out with the respective measuring equipment! The tests originate from the following specialist and mail-order companies, which have kindly made them available to us. Mrutzek Meeresaquaristik donated the JBL and Tetra tests, and Claude Schuhmacher from Aquaterrashop donated the following tests: Tropic Marin, Salifert, Sera and Aqua Light.
The following CA/MG were included in the test:
Result:
The solution contained 400mg calcium and 1200 magnesium
** Sera = not measurable as reagent number 3 was missing
Conclusion - CA:
With Salifert and Tropic Marin, the trade offers good tests that are also easy to use. It is a pity that we could not test Sera for calcium, because the MG value was quite good. The calcium monitor has been measured several times and sometimes shows about 10% too much. It is especially suitable for large systems where you often have to measure different pools for calcium. However, it probably needs to be calibrated more often. Aqua Light should think again about the syringe. It was not easy to handle. The Sera test did not have a syringe.
Conclusion - MG:
Salifert and Tropic Marin did particularly well here, followed by, who would have thought it, the Sera Magnesium Test. It would be nice of Sera to note on the package of the MG test that calcium was measured as well as magnesium. That way you don't need the calcium test, which I'm sure many people buy on the side. It would not be necessary. Unfortunately, Red Sea did not have a syringe
We would like to thank Messe Sindelfingen very much for the invitation, and of course Michael Mrutzek and Claude Schuhmacher for supporting the test sets.
